Accommodation types

Home Sweet Home

If you're a local student and your parents live relatively close to university, the idea of staying with your parents may not be as bad as you think. Accommodation is the probably the biggest cost students will incur while studying, aside from university fees of course. Living at home also gives you more time to study and play. Remember Home cooked meals YUMMM!

HomeStay

Homestay is an accommodation option for international students and students moving from out of State. As the name suggest students can rent out a room from a family or individual who lives in the house. Students normally integrate their lives with the family and are permitted to share most of the facilities at home. This again depends where and with whom students decide to stay with. Homestay can offer you a cheap alternative while providing a homely atmosphere. This type of accommodation offers students a good environment to study in, but can often lack a social side.

Colleges and halls of residence

Student Accommodation AustraliaColleges and halls of residences are student accommodation facilities that are normally located on campus or within walking distance. Generally halls and colleges offer students a room, including a bed, desk and wardrobe. Students are also offered communal areas where they can watch TV, play games and socialize. Some halls and colleges also offer communal kitchens where students can cook or make use of common kitchen appliances.

Halls have many advantages especially if you’re a new student. You are saved from having to go house hunting, security is normally good and extra bills are normally included in the rent so you don’t have to worry about paying numerous bills.

Additional features and perks of this type of accommodation can differ as they don’t all offer the same services. A majority will provide meals, tutoring and mentor services with additional academic facilities such as libraries and computer labs.

Halls and colleges are famous for active socializing and parties. This can be both a good and bad thing. Rent per room can also be fairly expensive reaching prices over $420 per week.

College Apartments

Student Accommodation AustraliaCollege apartments are more like normal independent apartments except for they are normally managed by the university. They offer greater independence and are normally offered to students progressing past their first year.

Just like a normal apartment, college apartments include a kitchen, living room, bedrooms and bathrooms. They will often come fully furnished. This type of student accommodation is generally cheaper then colleges and halls but it doesn't include meals or academic facilities. Students are also responsible for paying bills and setting up their own electricity accounts.

College apartments offer a more peaceful environment and greater privacy. Surrounding apartments will be accommodated by students as well so there is not much of a loss in regards to keeping in touch with the student community.

Shared Accommodation

After their first year, students tend to move out with their friends into shared accommodation. Students normally move into a bigger apartment or house sharing with about 3-4 other students. Sharing accommodation with other students allows you to reduce the costs and can offer a more enjoyable living environment. Students normally encounter problems when living together such as mess and late rental payments which can turn ugly when the landlord becomes involved. But if you think you found the right people to move in with go ahead and start searching on Unibay
